Dr. Charlotte Osafo

Dr. Osafo is an accomplished Physician, Nephrologist and Clinical Scientist, with over 25 years’ experience in Clinical Care, Research, Academia and Administration. Dr. Osafo’s career objective is to work with others to do good to humanity in any station of life. She has a passion for learning in order to help others.

She heads the Medical Department of the Bank of Ghana since 2018, leading her team of workers to implement the Bank’s strategic agenda of ensuring the wellbeing of the workforce for productivity. As part of her role she performs the job of the Medical Director of The Bank Hospital. She works with the executive management team to ensure the highest standard of quality care in the hospital.

She previously headed the Renal Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, leading its transformation and expansion from a 4-bed dialysis unit performing 240 dialysis sessions per month, to a 24-bed state of the art dialysis center. She also initiated and championed the first kidney transplantation program in Ghana resulting in the renal transplant program in Ghana.

Dr. Osafo has published extensively on hypertension and renal issues in high impact peer-reviewed journals. She has also participated in significant research projects looking into genetic and environmental causes of kidney disease in Sub-Saharan Africa, methods for diagnosing kidney diseases, and has taught internal medicine and nephrology to medical students at the University of Ghana Medical School.

Dr. Osafo has volunteered on some projects throughout her career and in that has performed awareness creation roles in the electronic media on kidney disease, rendered pro-bono medical care and screening to indigents, and supported charities on kidney disease. She is a founding director of the National Kidney Foundation, Ghana. Currently, she is the vice-president of the Ghana Kidney Association.

Dr. Osafo is an alumna of the University of Science and Technology (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians since 2007, Ghana College of Physicians since 2010, and the International Society of Nephrology since 2005. She was awarded a Meritorious Service Award in 2002 for her service at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
