Role Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (Microbiology) plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, contributing to patient care and public health efforts.

 Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Collect, process, and handle blood, urine, and other body fluids, adhering to established protocols and procedures. 
  • Prepare culture media, perform culturing, and conduct biochemical testing to isolate and identify microorganisms
  • Perform sensitivity testing to determine the susceptibility of microorganisms to antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents. 
  • Utilize microbial staining techniques and microscopic examination to identify and characterize microorganisms accurately. 
  • Examine and analyze body fluids, tissues, and cells to detect the presence of pathogens and abnormal cellular structures 
  • Conduct quality control checks on test results to ensure accuracy and reliability. 
  • Evaluate test results for accuracy and interpret findings to aid in clinical diagnosis and patient management. 
  • Maintain detailed records and reports of test results, following established procedures and guidelines. 
  • Practice safety, environmental, and infection control measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the laboratory and healthcare setting. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Clinical Microbiology / Medical Laboratory Science. 
  • 2+ years of experience within clinical Microbiology environment. 
  • Must be in good standing with Allied Health Professions Council.
  • Hands-on experience in specimen collection, processing, and handling according to standardized protocols. 
  • Proficiency in the preparation of culture media, culturing techniques, and biochemical testing. 
  • Strong skills in microbial staining and identification, including Gram staining and acid-fast staining. 
  • Excellent microscopic techniques and the ability to accurately observe and interpret cellular structures.
