Peri-operative Nurse

Role Summary:

The post holder will work as part of a team to provide a safe, effective, efficient care environment for patients, undergoing surgical procedures. They will be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of competent nursing care and support during each phase of a patient’s perioperative care.  They must possess sound and contemporary knowledge of perioperative nursing, together with an advanced understanding of professional nursing, and health care delivery. 

 Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assisting the surgical team to perform surgical procedures on patients successfully and ensures the patient receives optimal care. 
  • Providing high standards of skilled care at every phase of a patient’s perioperative care  
  • Conducting an individualized patient assessment on the health status of assigned patient(s) in the theatre, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or health needs as indicated by the patients’ medical diagnosis within the best practice nursing standards. 
  • Completing a comprehensive assessment according to the nursing process on each patient, by interview, observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation, records, and reports to assist in delivering nursing care by all members of the health care team. 
  • Demonstrate sound judgement in assessing the emotional and physical care of the patient in a holistic manner 
  • Conduct ongoing assessments as determined by patient’s condition, hospital’s policies, procedures or protocols and reprioritize care accordingly. 
  • Communicate the assessment data in an orderly fashion by recording, updating, and communicating the data amongst the health care team and revising when appropriate. 
  • Conducting of pre-operative and post-operative checks of the patients in the ward and record the visits. 
  • Confirmation of consent by patient, guardian or relative. 
  • Ensure patient safety, comfort and privacy during the surgical procedure.  
  • Count of swabs, needles, and instruments during all surgical procedures. 
  • Assisting the doctor during surgical procedure by handing him/her correct instrumentation and stock.
  • Informs doctor of any concerns, problems or patient needs and response to treatment, consult with doctor if any problems or queries occur regarding any prescribed treatment e.g. medication or wound care. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Degree/Diploma in General Nursing. 
  • A post basic qualification in Peri-operative nursing. 
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a multidisciplinary private healthcare theatre complex.
  • Evidence of competent experience in perioperative nursing, together with contemporary skills and knowledge of the specialty. 
  • Current registration as Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. 
  • Current registration as Peri-operative nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. 
  • Ability to work as a team member.
